Zoysia Grass Care Guide
Zoysia is the most cold-tolerant warm-season grass, thriving as far north as zone 6. It forms a dense, carpet-like lawn that resists weeds naturally — but is slow to establish and has a longer dormancy period than bermuda.
Mowing
Maintain zoysia at 1-2.5 inches. The dense growth habit means it needs mowing every 5-7 days during peak season. Like bermuda, zoysia benefits from spring scalping to remove dormant material.
Fertilization
Zoysia needs 2-3 lbs N per 1,000 sq ft per year — less than bermuda. Start at greenup (soil 65°F+). Apply 0.5-1 lb N every 6-8 weeks during active growth. Stop nitrogen when soil drops below 65°F.
Weed Control
Zoysia's dense growth naturally suppresses weeds once established. Pre-emergent: prodiamine at soil 50-55°F. Post-emergent: Celsius WG is the safest broadleaf option. Avoid triclopyr.
Common Problems
Large patch disease is the primary concern — a fungal disease that appears when soil temperatures are 65-75°F during dormancy transitions. Preventive azoxystrobin in fall can help. Zoysia is also slower to recover from damage than bermuda.
