Community Consensus

The go-to for mole cricket control in the Southeast. Apply in May-June when nymphs emerge. Evening application is most effective.

Overview

Fipronil granular insecticide is the primary tool for mole cricket control in warm-season lawns across the Southeast (zones 8-10). Mole crickets tunnel through the soil, severing grass roots and creating raised tunnels that dry out the surface — they are among the most destructive lawn insects in their range.

How It Works

Fipronil disrupts the insect nervous system through contact and ingestion. Applied as granules and watered in, it moves into the soil where mole crickets live and feed. The product provides residual control over several weeks.

Timing

Apply in May-June when mole cricket nymphs emerge. Young nymphs are much more susceptible to control than adults. Evening application is most effective because mole crickets are most active at night near the soil surface.

Application

Spread granules with a broadcast spreader and water in with at least 0.25 inches of irrigation. This moves the product into the top few inches of soil where nymphs are active. Apply in the evening for best contact with emerging nymphs.

Also Controls

Fipronil granular is also effective against fire ants, making it a dual-purpose product for Southeast lawns.
