Community Consensus
The standard starter fert. Available everywhere. Use this or the version with mesotrione for seeding.
Overview
The standard starter fertilizer for new seeding and overseeding projects. The high phosphorus content (25%) promotes rapid root establishment in new grass seedlings.
How It Works
The 24-25-4 ratio provides nitrogen for initial leaf growth, high phosphorus for root development, and a small amount of potassium. This combination gives new seedlings the best possible start by encouraging both above-ground and below-ground growth.
When to Use
Apply at seeding time for fall overseeding (Rule 5.1), spring overseeding (Rule 5.2), or warm-season seeding (Rule 5.5). Can be used alongside liquid mesotrione or replaced by Scotts Starter + Weed Preventer (which combines both products).
Not for Established Lawns
This is a seeding-specific product. The high phosphorus content is unnecessary for established lawns with mature root systems, and phosphorus runoff is an environmental concern. Some states restrict phosphorus application on established turf.
