Community Consensus
The only reliable nutsedge killer for homeowners. Plan on 2-3 applications — sedge has underground tubers that require persistence.
Overview
Sedgehammer (halosulfuron-methyl) is the only reliable nutsedge control product available to homeowners. Because nutsedge spreads through underground tubers that persist even after the visible plant is killed, multiple applications are almost always required.
How It Works
Halosulfuron inhibits an enzyme (ALS) essential for amino acid production in sedges. It is absorbed through the leaves and translocates to the root and tuber system. Visible yellowing and browning occurs within 1-2 weeks of application.
Application Protocol
Mix the water-dispersible granule with water and a non-ionic surfactant. Spray directly onto nutsedge foliage. Plan on 2-3 applications spaced 6-10 weeks apart. Each application kills the current generation of shoots, but dormant tubers will send up new growth that requires retreatment.
Why Multiple Applications Are Necessary
A single nutsedge plant can produce 1,900 tubers per season, and these tubers can remain dormant in soil for years. Each treatment kills the active shoots and damages connected tubers, but the deeper tuber reserves require multiple rounds to exhaust. Be patient — persistent treatment over a full growing season significantly reduces the tuber bank.
Safe on All Grass Types
Sedgehammer is labeled safe on all common cool-season and warm-season turfgrasses, making it a universal nutsedge solution regardless of your grass type.
