Community Consensus

The answer to creeping charlie. If 3-way isn't touching it, triclopyr will. Caution near trees with exposed surface roots.

Overview

Triclopyr is the go-to herbicide for difficult broadleaf weeds that resist standard 3-way herbicides, particularly creeping charlie (ground ivy), white clover, wild violet, and oxalis.

How It Works

Triclopyr is a synthetic auxin that disrupts growth regulation in broadleaf plants, causing uncontrolled, fatal growth. It is more effective than 2,4-D on viney, creeping weeds because it translocates more efficiently through stolon networks.

Primary Target: Creeping Charlie

Creeping charlie is the lawn care community’s most hated weed, and triclopyr is the primary weapon against it. Apply in fall when the plant is sending nutrients to its root system. May need 2 applications spaced 3 weeks apart for complete control.

Temperature Limit

Do not apply triclopyr above 80°F. At high temperatures, the herbicide can volatilize (become airborne) and drift onto nearby desirable plants, shrubs, or trees. Early morning fall applications are ideal.

Tree Caution

Use care when applying near trees with exposed surface roots. Triclopyr can be absorbed by tree roots and cause damage. Keep spray away from the drip line of ornamental trees.
